The year of the Dragon festivities begin...

We began our day with a Dragon dance that the folks at our building arranged for the residents.
Traditionally on New Years you are supposed to give the young children envelopes with small amounts of money.
Like Christmas this tradition has gotten out of control and now you basically tip everyone that serves you.
This would include maids, doormen, bellboys, receptionist, almost everyone! Ken had a hard time remembering
to whom he had given. We the staff sees you coming they line up with their hands extended.  The days here continue to be cold and gloomy. Last night we ventured to Kowloon to watch the parade with about three million other spectators! Two good things, body heat and being over 5'9" certainly gave us a vantage point.  After forty minutes of fighting the crowds on the streets to catch a view of little people walking in the parade, I asked Ken to humor me and find the end of the parade which worked out for the better. Less crowded and able to view practically everyone that walked the parade. Total time of the parade was approximately three hours. Certainly not like Macy's day parade, there may have been five floats total! We did see people from Italy, Thailand, Russia and I think even the U.S. participate in the parade. A fun time by all and it ended just as the rain started to come down! Tonight fireworks!

  1. Amore,

What a fantastic job you are doing as chronicler of our year and a day adventure! Keep it up, it is definitely worth it. You will look back at it as one of the most important works of your life. I love reading your thoughts and descriptions, and the photos are, of course, superb!

    Love always, your Husband

  2. Your blog is my new favorite! The way you captured the mood of the parade, it feels as if I were there. Some of the dragon head are my very favorite, and the little boy in gold, exquisite work. Let me know which one you want to print first. Monday's are going to be my regular day in the print studio.
